Musk Warns Traditional Automakers of Their “Kodak Moment”
On August 23, Elon Musk issued a cautionary note on Tuesday, stating that if traditional automakers do not accelerate their transition to electric vehicles (EVs), they will experience their “Kodak moment”. This refers to the fate of the once-leading film industry giant, Kodak, which failed to keep pace with the digital age and was eventually phased out.
A post by a user named ‘X’ read: “Traditional cars are about to face their Kodak moment.” To which Musk responded, “Unfortunately, this is a trend for many automakers. Some companies do realize this, but their pace of change remains slow. Tesla is trying its best to assist other car manufacturers in the transition to autonomous electric vehicles: we have open-sourced our patents, provided access to our Supercharger stations, and invited them to use our self-driving AI system.”
While some traditional automakers, such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors, are stepping up their transition to EVs, they also face challenges, including increasing losses. Currently, in the United States, electric vehicles account for less than 10% of new car sales. In 2022, EVs made up approximately 6% of new car sales.
