Data shows that at the end of 2023, the total population of Hong Kong was 7.5031 million. But on March 29, 2024, as many as 526,000 Hong Kong residents left the city, with 460,000 of them traveling to Shenzhen by land. At the same time, the number of inbound and outbound tourists at the Shenzhen port reached 882,000 person-times, hitting a historic high.

The main reason is that Shenzhen’s goods and services have a significant advantage in terms of cost-effectiveness compared to Hong Kong. While in the past 10-20 years, Shenzhen’s prices were low but product quality was relatively inferior, making it difficult to attract Hong Kong consumers. But now, Shenzhen has surpassed Hong Kong in both urban development and commodity services, especially in the daily consumer goods sector where Shenzhen enjoys obvious price advantages.

In the past, Hong Kong as a free trade port had low tariffs, which attracted a large number of mainland consumers to shop there. But the situation has now reversed – even after adding tariffs, many of Shenzhen’s commodities still have an overall better cost-performance ratio than Hong Kong’s. As a result, Hong Kong people have started to flood into Shenzhen for consumption, with some products even being “out of stock” for a time.
