Apple Offers $100M Indonesian Factory to Lift iPhone 16 Ban

Apple has proposed investing $100 million to establish a manufacturing facility in Indonesia in response to a government-imposed ban on its iPhone 16 models. The ban stems from the tech giant’s failure to meet local investment and content requirements.

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry announced that Apple plans to build an accessories and components factory in Bandung, West Java. This proposal significantly increases Apple’s initial $10 million offer. The government has welcomed the investment and scheduled discussions to review the proposal.

Last month, Indonesia banned the sale of iPhone 16 models, citing Apple’s inability to meet its mandate that 40% of a device’s components be locally sourced. The same rule also led to a ban on Google’s Pixel phones.

During a visit earlier this year by Apple CEO Tim Cook, Indonesia’s then-president Joko Widodo urged the company to establish a manufacturing facility in the country. However, Cook did not make any commitments at the time.
