Woman Earns $42,000 in Three Months Through Matchmaking Scam
A matchmaking scam in Guiyang, southwestern China, has drawn police attention for defrauding single men, with some women earning up to 300,000 yuan (US$42,000) in just a few months.
Before a police crackdown, matchmaking agencies operated from high-end office spaces in Huaguoyuan to gain clients’ trust. Staff targeted single men from smaller, remote cities while recruiting women, often divorced and in debt, to act as potential brides. The scam lured male clients into paying hefty fees before the women abruptly divorced, securing financial gains.
