ByteDance, owner of TikTok and Douyin, is investing 4.5 billion yuan (US$614 million) in a new computing center in Datong, Shanxi. Spanning over 200,000 square meters—about 30 football fields—the project aims to bolster its AI capabilities, including Doubao, a top-performing ChatGPT-like service in China. Operated by Volcano Cloud, ByteDance’s move highlights its aggressive push into the AI sector, supported by recent upgrades to its AI models and services. Shanxi’s government has approved the site, which will significantly enhance computing power to meet growing demand for AI solutions.
