Myanmar Deports Over 50,000 Scam Suspects, Calls for Regional Intervention

Myanmar’s ruling junta announced on Tuesday that it had deported more than 50,000 people suspected of involvement in online scam operations to China since October 2023, making a rare appeal to neighboring countries to take action.

Scam compounds have proliferated in Myanmar’s border regions, employing trafficked foreign workers who are forced to defraud their compatriots. Analysts estimate the industry is worth billions of dollars.
