‘Ne Zha 2’ Breaks $2 Billion, Challenging Western Box Office Dominance
When Kung Fu Panda smashed box office records in 2008, it sparked controversy in China. Nationalists were upset that a hit film showcasing Chinese culture was made by Americans, with some even calling for a government ban.

However, the success of DreamWorks’ film inspired China’s film industry. Years of industrialization and effort have paid off — culminating in “Ne Zha 2” becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
On Monday, the sequel’s ticket sales surpassed $2 billion, and by Friday, after 38 days in theaters, the total reached $2.015 billion (according to ticketing platform Maoyan). This makes “Ne Zha 2” the first non-Hollywood film to hit the multibillion-dollar mark globally, signaling that Western dominance in China’s market is fading.

However, industry insiders warn that despite Ne Zha 2’s remarkable success, it’s still too early to expect Chinese studios to consistently deliver this level of box office triumph.
