Canadian Lobster Prices Sink Under Tariff Pressure

China’s retaliatory tariffs on Canadian seafood, including lobsters, are causing a 25% price drop as exporters scramble to maintain supply chains. Alexander Schultz, founder of Turnbury, a Hong Kong-based distributor, noted that adjusting prices is essential to keep products moving since China remains a major buyer. The new 25% tariff on aquatic products follows China’s broader 100% tariff on Canadian rapeseed oil, oil cakes, and peas, imposed in response to Canada’s duties on Chinese electric vehicles and metals. Meanwhile, the US will also impose a 25% tariff on Canadian seafood starting April 2, adding further pressure on exporters.
