China‘s Big Banks Squeezed by Slimmer Margins
China’s top six state-owned banks have reported record-low net interest margins as the slowing economy and government credit expansion weigh on profits. According to the Financial Times, the average margin dropped to 1.48% by the end of 2023, down from 1.6% in 2022 and above 2% in 2021. The combination of more savers and official pressure to increase lending is squeezing profitability across the sector.
